WHAT IS IT LIKE TO LIVE IN A CARDBOARD BOX? An Initiative to Help Heat Harvest House
From 12:00 p.m. on November 12th until 6:00 p.m. on November 14th,
Jennifer Marr and her team will be rotating shifts and living in a
giant cardboard box in the Champlain Place parking lot to help raise
awareness about homelessness and the services Harvest House provides as
well as enough money to fill the 20 oil tanks it takes to heat Harvest
House during the winter months.
Background:
If you were given a crisp $100 bill and a mission to make a change in your community, what would you do? Well, for 10 individuals in the Greater Moncton community, that’s exactly what has happened!
On October 28th during the annual Excellence Awards, the Greater Moncton Chamber of Commerce launched a new initiative called Mission Possible and introduced the first 10 Community Change Agents. The concept of the program is for the Community Change Agents to do as much good for the community as they can with only $100.
One of the Community Change Agents from the first group has decided to live in a cardboard box.
“Harvest House provides a crucial service for the homeless by ensuring that they have a warm place to stay during the dangerously cold winter months,” says Jennifer. “After talking with Harvest House representatives, I realized that it is extremely expensive to heat their buildings so, along with my team, I came up with the idea of living in a giant cardboard box for 54 hours at Champlain Place as a fund raising and awareness initiative. Our goal is to raise $14,000, which is the amount it takes to purchase the 20 oil tanks required to keep the Harvest House residences heated each winter.
We will also be accepting donations of warm clothes and bedding as those are very much in demand during the cold winter season as well. Any clothing/bedding that we have in excess will be distributed to other organizations in the city that also provide for the less fortunate. I’d like to encourage people in the community to stop by, spend some time living in the cardboard box with us and make a donation to Help Heat Harvest House.”
