Summer Sailing Camps at Shediac Bay Yacht Club
When: Begins June 29th - runs 8 weeks until August 21st Time: From 9:30 to 4:30 - Monday to Friday (doors open at 9:00) Where: The Yacht Club, Shediac Bay Marina The Shediac Bay Yacht Club Sailing School is a day camp program for children between the ages of 8 and 18 who want to learn to sail or improve their existing sailing and racing skills. We offer on-water dingy instruction as well as on land theory classes for sailors of all levels. Our students follow the CYA (Canadian Yachting Association) "Learn To Sail Program" and with experience, practice and knowledge can advance through the 6 levels offered in our program.
The first thing we do everyday is rig our boats and put them in the water. There is a briefing in the morning where the instructors tell us the plan for the day. We try to start sailing by 11 o'clock and once we are on the water we usually divide into two groups (beginner sailors and advanced sailors.) We run drills, play games and race all morning until lunch. Students and instructors go to shore for lunch around 12:15 After lunch we go back out on the water and practice the skills we have learned. If a student is working on their level then sometimes the instructors get in the boat for some one on one coaching.
At the end of the day everyone sails in and de-rigs their boats. We usually have a de-brief to go over the skills that were learned and the progress that was made that day. Two or three times a week we will also have a class to learn the theory part of sailing.
