The Diary of Jeremiah Bancroft
Tuesday July 6th at 7:30 p.m.

A conference by Jonathan Fowler and Earle Lockerby will be presented on The Diary of Jeremiah Bancroft:  On September 5th, 1755, Lieut.-Col. John Winslow of Massachusetts arrested over 400 Acadian men and boys at the parish church in Grand-Pré.

Until now almost everything known about this event derives from Winslow’s journal, which was published by the Nova Scotia Historical Society in 1883. But another writer stood among Winslow’s men in the church that day. His name was Jeremiah Bancroft, and his little known diary was published for the first time in the 2009 volume of the Journal of the Royal Nova Scotia Historical Society.

Edited and interpreted by archaeologist Jonathan Fowler (Saint Mary’s University) and historian Earle Lockerby, Bancroft’s diary covers the period between the young officer’s departure from Boston in April 1755 until his return the following February. During the interval, he participated in the successful Anglo-American assault against the Fort Beauséjour. After its fall, Bancroft’s unit was sent to Grand-Pré, where he assisted in carrying out the deportation of that area’s Acadian population.  Information: 758-9808
