Moncton Industrial Development Corporation Feature
by Heather Ferguson
The thriving City of Moncton is served
by two great industrial Parks – the Moncton Industrial Park in the
city’s southwest sector and Caledonia Industrial Estates northeast of
the city and adjacent to the Trans Canada Highway. Both industrial
centres come under the umbrella of Moncton Industrial Development Ltd.,
an entity responsible for the development of space to accommodate new
business and industry to our area.
Since 1960, the Moncton Industrial Park
has been home to up-and-coming businesses and industrial enterprises.
Growing in tandem with the Greater Moncton Area’s own expansion and
development, this industrial park is now close to full capacity. The
last few years in particular have seen the addition of 60 to 70
companies to the park, making it the largest industrial park in the New
Brunswick in terms of the number of companies it includes. To date,
there are approximately 276 companies in this 600-acre park including
operations such as Armour Logistics’ 300,000 sq. ft. warehouse, Terrain
Group, Norampac, and Fancy Pokket Bakery.
At Caledonia
Industrial Estates, there’s room to grow! This industrial centre has
seen marked expansion with many good sized companies locating to the
park in the last ten years. Encompassing some 1,600 acres, this park is
fast becoming a major player in the Atlantic Transportation Network.
Location, location, location represents the distinct strategic
advantage of Caledonia Industrial Estates. Sitting adjacent to the
Trans Canada Highway and served by CN Rail, Caledonia is an ideal
industrial park for companies serving communities throughout the
Atlantic region and beyond. Locally, the park is also well connected
with direct links to Route 15, the Greater Moncton International
Airport, other area industrial parks, and to downtown Moncton.
Offering
prime lots in three distinct zones, Caledonia Industrial Estates is
comprised of a traditional industrial zone, an open industry sector,
and a commercial area to allow for restaurant and hotel facilities that
can cater to both the parks’ employees and travellers on the road.
Early 2007 saw the opening of the ever popular Tim Horton’s/Shell
Convenience Store Complex on Harrisville Blvd. while nearby, the new
110,000 sq. ft. Molson Brewery is due to be in full operation this
Fall. Other important tenants of the park are the 230,000 sq. ft.
Shoppers Drug Mart Distribution Centre serving the entire Atlantic
region, Atlantic Wholesalers’ 185,000 sq. ft. frozen food distribution
centre, Spielo Manufacturing’s 100,000 sq. ft. facility specializing in
gaming and video lottery terminals, Irving Personal Care’s 150,000 sq.
ft. diaper manufacturing plant, and currently under construction is
Al-Pack Industries’ 60,000 sq. ft. manufacturing plant and the new
Peterbilt dealership.
Moncton Industrial Development’s General
Manager, Peter Belliveau, says, “Our focus is on further expansion of
Caledonia Industrial Estates, developing lots, creating the
infrastructure of basic services, and opening up a network of new
streets in a ‘ready-to-go’ capacity to accommodate new industries to
the park.” The future does indeed bode well for both of these
industrial centres as driving forces behind the economic health of the
Greater Moncton Area as a whole.
