Broken Embraces

Feb 9-10
Dir: Pedro Almodóvar, Spain, 2009, 128 min.
Penélope Cruz, Lluis Homar, Blanca Portillo
(Spanish with English Subtitles)
In another master stroke from Almodóvar, we are treated to a beguiling blend of noir, melodrama and movie-biz satire about an ill-fated love triangle among a film-maker, a jealous tycoon and Cruz’s woman of many faces. Blind screenwriter Harry Caine used to be director Mateo Blanco. A nemesis from the past comes to visit telling how Harry lost his sight and lost control over his last movie. Cruz enters the triangle as the lover of both Mateo and the doomed movie producer. A complex web which only Almodóvar can weave with satisfying and fascinating results.

An Education

Feb 16-17
Dir: Lone Scherfig, UK, 2009, 95 min.
Peter Sarsgaard, Carey Mulligan, Alfred Molina

Jenny is a promising but naive Oxford-primed school girl in early 60s London. She gets whisked away from her pre-ordained path to university and her sheltered existence by David, a charming (older - twice her age) gentleman who takes her to clubs, to concerts and to Paris. Jenny falls head over heels in love with David and thoughts of school fly out the window. Aside from the age difference, David is more than a little shady when it comes to how he can afford his jet set lifestyle. Nothing quite works out as smoothly as it should and the romance comes crashing down before long. The movie watches the transformation of Jenny from the innocent pre-Oxford school girl to the lass forcibly matured beyond her years.

Creation

Feb 23-24
Dir: Jon Amiel, UK, 2009, 108 min.
Paul Bettany, Jennifer Connelly, Jeremy Northam

Opening Night Gala - Toronto Film Festival, 2009. It is 1858 and Charles Darwin has returned from his far flung travels on the HMS Beagle to settle into a quiet life in the British countryside and begin his work on The Origin of Species. What is conventional thought now on evolution was heresy then as his theory turned religious beliefs of the day upside down. While Darwin was in the eye of the storm he was creating in society at large, it is Darwin’s life and family who are at centre stage. His deeply religious wife Emma was a counter balance to Darwin’s drive to publish his theory of evolution. They had five children, one of whom, Annie, died at the age of 9. The mixture and conflict between God and science that Darwin created plays out first in his own family.

Precious

Mar 2-3
Dir: Lee Daniels, USA, 2009, 109 min.
Gabourey Sidibe, Mo’Nique, Mariah Carey & Paula Patton

People’s Choice Award Winner, Toronto Film Festival 2009. The story of 16-year-old Precious, a fat, illiterate and pregnant by her father for the second time, who catches a break when she is sent to an alternative school so she can learn to read. Never lapsing into cliché, there are elaborate fantasy sequences scattered throughout the film to give viewers a break from the sometimes stifling hardship. Ultimately a story of redemption and seemingly insurmountable odds, not the least of which is Precious’ monster mother and, yes it is the first film produced, promoted and backed by ...Oprah.

The Young Victoria

Mar 16-17
Dir: Jean-Marc Vallée, UK, 2009, 100 min.
Emily Blunt, Rupert Friend, Miranda Richardson

Closing Night Gala - Toronto Film Festival, 2009. Alternately a delicate and profoundly romantic look at England’s last golden age and the story of the romance between Victoria and Albert. Prior to her coronation we see the young Victoria growing up sheltered and protected by her mother only to be crowned a young queen completely unaware of the consequences of her actions and of her omnipotence. Victoria must learn on the job how to rule an empire on which the sun never sets. Throughout all we remain focused on the relationship between Victoria and her Albert who forge a bond. Beautifully directed, exquisitely acted, young Victoria is a memorable and charming exploration of English history.

Last Station

Mar 23-24
Dir: Michael Hoffman, UK/USA, 2009, 112 min.
Christopher Plummer, Helen Mirren, Paul Giamatti

Set in the last tumultuous years of Leo Tolstoy’s life, we see the battle for his soul waged by his wife Sofya and Andreyevna and his leading disciple Vladimir Cherkov. Torn between his professed doctrine of poverty and chastity and the reality of his enormous wealth, his 13 children and his life of hedonism. While it is a grandly entertaining historical drama about the final year of Tolstoy’s life, the movie is at once a hot marital showdown and a cool political debate, a domestic war and peace.

Police, Adjective

Mar 30-31
Dir: Corneliu Porumboiu, Romania, 2009, 113 min.
Dragos Bucur, Vlad Ivanov, Irina Saulescu
(Romanian with English Subtitles)

This is a police story Romanian style. A young small-town undercover cop follows a dreary routine in an even dreaier milieu. He is trailing a teen pot-smoker to root out the supplier. Big stuff. But things take a turn for the clever. There are no handcuffs or guns in this film; when it’s crunch time and the cop is told to bust the teen by his superior, out comes....the dictionary. Police work turns philosophical with debates over definitions of "police", "conscience" and "law". Police, Adjective takes the fine points of an incident (and of dictionary definition) and dryly plays them straight and for laughs.

Cooking With Stella

Apr 13 (the hall is closed on the 14th - sorry!)
Dir: Dilip Mehta, CAN, 2009, 103 min.

Don McKellar, Seema Biswas, Lisa Ray
(English and Hindi with English Subtitles)

When Chef Michael moves to New Delhi to play house husband to wife Maya, a Canadian diplomat, he is a bit resentful until he realizes he can learn some culinary tricks from house cook Stella. The thing is Stella has other tricks - she’s been making a ton of dough scamming the diplomats living in the house for decades, and the new arrivals are no exception. Cooking with Stella puts an appealingly rye and distinctly Indo-Canadian spin on upstairs-downstairs tales of servants who outwit their social betters.

The White Ribbon

April 20 and 21: CANCELLED: THE HALL IS UNAVAILABLE - SORRY

Dir: Michael Haneke, Germany, 2009, 145 min.
Christian Friedel, Leonie Benesch, Ulrich Tukur
(German with English Subtitles)

Palmed’or, - Cannes Film Festival, 2009. Set in a village in northern Germany on the eve of WW1 we see a gifted director lay bare the roots of fascism. Although the dark side of humanity envelopes the film, the story is centered on Lehrer, a shy sweet tempered school teacher who recalls the series of strange and sometimes violent incidents that happen in the town. Though an analysis of the roots of Nazism can be read into the film, it has a more universal reach. What goes on in the village could, arguably, happen anywhere.
