Metro Moncton School of Music: Offering a
wide range of courses in voice, guitar, drums, bass, violin, piano, and
music theory
by Heather Ferguson
As New Brunswick’s largest school
of music, Metro Moncton School of Music is a dynamic force in today’s
musical scene, having grown from humble roots to become one of the most
outstanding schools in Atlantic Canadian musical circles. Offering a
wide range of courses in voice, guitar, drums, bass, violin, piano, and
theory, Metro Moncton School of Music is pleased to announce new, fully
computerized programs with state-of-the-art computers in the classroom.
Always on the cutting edge of innovative teaching ideas and of the
latest in technology, the new approach to computerized learning serves
to facilitate onsite learning as well as at-home networking by
augmenting traditional forms of teaching and creating an exciting
musical learning experience. As Mr. Xavier Robichaud, Director of Metro
Moncton School of Music, says, “Our new computerized classrooms give us
a modern approach to teaching music. Moncton is fast becoming a
cultural centre as the recent success of The Rolling Stones Concert
shows. With Metro Moncton School of Music, as one of the first music
schools in Atlantic Canada to introduce computerized instruction, we’ve
found our students to be very enthusiastic about our computerized
teaching programs as they offer greater versatility in opening up wider
horizons musically to students. These programs can be adapted to all
instruments and while they do not replace a teacher, they are a great
tool for students and teachers alike, especially since teachers can
share their knowledge with each other through networking.”
The computer is a highly specialized learning tool. With five to six new computer programs offered by the Metro Moncton School of Music,
there are lessons specifically designed to slow down the speed of music
for greater effectiveness in teaching as the student can listen to
music at various speeds. There are programs that can enable the
instructor to compose music just for the student with full symphonic
accompaniment in whatever style of music he or she chooses. For
example, in the case of voice, a teacher can create an accompaniment to
the student’s piece and transfer it to the computer so that the student
can access it at home for the purpose of practice. Some programs enable
music to be played directly into the computer with various sound
effects added to enhance a student’s composition. There are programs
that help young people to learn to read music using games which make
for a fun experience by helping to enhance learning while other
programs help students to write their own music. The long-term goal of
Metro Moncton School of Music in incorporating computers in the
classroom is to be able to have students have a learning session with
great artists in larger city centres by networking through the school.
Metro
Moncton School of Music is located at 388 St. George Street in the
heart of the city centre. Easily accessible, its spacious premises
above the La Guitare Music Store has roots that go back 25 years to
1980 when private lessons were offered at the then newly opened store
by well-known area artist Regina Coté. Since then, the teaching
capabilities of the establishment has grown and expanded under the
auspices of Mr. Don Richard who acquired La Guitare in 1992. A music
lover and graduate of Université de Moncton’s musical program, Don
Richard’s love of music together with his unique entrepreneurial vision
propelled him to establish Metro Moncton School of Music as a separate
entity. With a mandate to offer individualized instruction tailored to
each student’s needs, progress can be achieved at each student’s own
rate. Stringent requirements on the part of instructors ensure the high
level of education with new instructors undergoing training programs
specifically designed to maintain quality in standards and to fulfill
the school’s mission “to elevate the profile of Metro Moncton School of
Music within the community by providing the highest level of musical
education.”
