2010 DECLARED YEAR OF THE PETITCODIAC RIVER

6-month countdown to causeway gate opening begins!

Petitcodiac Riverkeeper unveiled a new initiative - in Moncton on September 25th, 2009 - inviting the community, schools, businesses and all levels of government to designate 2010 as the Year of the Petitcodiac River to mark the historic beginning of river restoration.

The new initiative, announced to coincide with the 6-month countdown to the opening of the causeway gates, is designed as an open invitation to challenge the community to celebrate the mighty Petitcodiac’s heritage next year in light of the beginning of the river restoration project.

“In the spring of 2010, people in this watershed are going to witness the beginning of the largest river restoration project ever undertaken in Canada, along with the end of the longest standing environmental battle in this country (over 40 years),” said Riverkeeper Tim Van Hinte. “It’s fitting that the community celebrate this historic event,” he added.

In the coming months, Riverkeeper will be approaching the Province of New Brunswick, watershed municipalities, schools, businesses and other community associations to call on them to prepare for the restoration project by inviting them to declare 2010 as the Year of the Petitcodiac River and plan special activities to celebrate this historic event. A logo for the 2010 Year of the Petitcodiac was also unveiled at today’s news conference.

In addition, the announcement marks the sixth activity undertaken as part of Petitcodiac Riverkeeper’s 10th Anniversary celebrations in 2009.
